  History of our building

32 Fore Street was built in c1825 for Lieutenant George Lawrance.

After his exploits at sea, which included sailing with Captain Bligh (of Bounty fame) George Lawrance, set up a Naval Training School in the building. He was a noted artist and many of his paintings are housed in the local museum. These include a watercolour of Fore St painted in 1825.

In 1840 Lawrance retired from the Navy and was given the rank of Commander. He died in 1846.

It is believed that 32 Fore Street remained a private school until the 1930's, when it was converted to a fried fish shop. Subsequently the building was used as a hardware shop, and a Convenience store. The building is still reputed to be haunted by the Ghost of Commander Lawrance !!
