FIRST PRIZE
FOR MUFFINS FROM TASTE OF THE WEST
Lostwithiel further added to its reputation as a centre
for food enthusiasts last week when one of the town's tea
shops received first prize in a Taste of the West
competition. A secret assessment of Muffins in Fore
Street was carried out by judges from Taste of the West
during a summer competition to find the best tea room in
Cornwall.
Scoring against various criteria including quality and
freshness of ingredients, commitment to local sourcing
and value for money, the judges found cause to award
Muffins top marks in almost all categories.
This latest accolade comes after the prestigious Award
for Excellence was bestowed upon the tea shop last April
during the UK Tea Council's annual awards.
Lindsay Southgate, co-proprietor of Muffins, said:
"We are delighted to receive the Gold Award from
Taste of the West as it recognises our passion for local
produce.
"We try to offer our customers the very best food
available in Cornwall, and we are fortunate to have some
outstanding suppliers right on our doorstep.
"Cornwall produces so much good food that it makes
our job a real pleasure."
Muffins has now automatically progressed to the next
stage of judging to find the best tea room in the South
West of England.
The results will be announced in October.

Matt Wade on his Independent
Guide to some of the UK's best Tea Shops web site wrote:-
"An Award Winning Tea Room in a small street in
the Cornish Town of Lostwithiel. It has a lovely inside
space ideal if the weather isn't on your side but the
winner is the outside garden with around 5 tables or
varying sizes to choose from.
Run by Keith and Lindsay Southgate the service is good
and the menu varied. You can also take away produce from
Muffins as it has a little shop side to the tearoom
selling local produce and take away ice creams.
A nice selection of teas along with milkshakes make this
a great tearoom for all the family to enjoy".

Cornwall Food Magazine in the March 2007 Edition featured
Lostwithiel.
The following review of Muffins was included:
"After a good morning's antiques hunting head
over to Muffins for a spot of refreshment. The café is
serious about local sourcing and showcases much of the
best products currently being produced in the county.
You'll find Treleavens ice cream, Tregothnan Estate tea,
local Just Water and loads more. The home cooking is good
and the service very friendly."
